The Beach Art Center is presenting its Second Annual Beach Art Center Bluegrass Festival on May 19, from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed!

Bands to be featured at the festival will include the Wholetones (Naples), one of Florida's most popular string bands; Gypsy Wind (Seminole), one of Florida's best bluegrass/swing bands, led by the beautiful-voiced Kristin Holloway; the Spark Notes (Sarasota), great songwriters with a lot of Florida music and impeccable harmony; and Dawg Peter Pat, one of the state's top Florida folk music acts. According to Pete Gallagher, well known Florida Folk artist and host of WMNF-FM's Florida Folk Show, "This is as fine a five hours of acoustic music as anyone could hope for."

Food vendors include Red Lion, Angry Pepper, Slyce and Kooky Coconut. BAC will sell burgers, franks, beer, soda and water.

The event's major music sponsor is Plumlee Realty in Indian Rocks Beach. Co-sponsors include Crabby Bills, Tampa Bay Newspapers and the City of Indian Rocks Beach.

Kick-Off Party on Clearwater Beach's Beach Walk

The Kick-Off Party for Restaurant Week will be held on Friday, May 11th, 2012, from 5:00-9:00pm on the east side of Beach Walk on S. Gulfview Blvd. between the Hyatt Regency Resort and Crabby's Bar & Grill. For a $20 per person entry fee, you'll have access to more than 40 participating restaurant's tents that will line Beach Walk, each featuring tasty samples from their menu. A optional wine tasting wrist band can be purchased for an additional $10.00. Tickets may be purchased at the door during the event or at the Clearwater Beach Chamber Office.

In addition to the mouthwatering cuisine, there will be beer & wine sales, two stages featuring live music, an opportuniy to buy raffle tickets for several value-packed gift baskets, a Live Chef's auction and a fireworks display at dusk.

There is no charge for this family-fun activity, but donations are expected. Your contributions keep the trains running. Your enjoyment and gratitude keep the generous volunteers feeling very appreciated!

As this is a popular event, the lines can sometimes be long. However, we have scheduled local non-profit organizations to provide refreshments. They raise money for their worthy causes while satisfying your hunger and quenching your thirst. Everybody wins!

Additionally, with the Largo Rotary Rainbow Playground, a winding sidewalk path, a tranquil water feature, numerous shady patches, and great open expanses of lush grass, your family will surely have tons of outdoors fun all day.

The fourth annual festival officially begins Thursday, March 29, at 5 p.m. with the opening of a carnival. Michigan-based operator Arnold Amusements runs the midway each year complete with an old-time Ferris wheel, amusement rides, games and “carny” food. The carnival runs all four days through Sunday, April 1, until 6 p.m.

New to the Citrus Festival this year and sure to be a show stopper is Battle of the Bands sponsored by JG Health Clinics. About 30 participating bands will be judged and ranked by a panel of industry professionals. Five top finalists will be chosen to perform on Saturday during the festival. The winning band gets a chance to produce a mastered single in a professional studio – a prize valued at $3,750 – and performs live at the festival Saturday night before the headliner.

Another crowning event will be the Citrus Festival Queen Pageant. The contest is open to all females, 14 to 18 years of age who are in the ninth through 12th grades. Contestants must be a resident of Palm Harbor, Ozona or Crystal Beach or attend either Palm Harbor University High School or East Lake High School. Contestants will be judged according to preliminary assessments, eveningwear and one special interview question. The grand prize includes a $500 college scholarship, gift bags and the title of Miss Palm Harbor Citrus Festival Queen.

The weekend festivities kick off on Saturday at 8 a.m. with a 5K run and 1-mile walk. The Kiwanis Club of Palm Harbor will serve a pancake breakfast for hungry joggers after the race.

Saturday is the big vendor day and between 30 and 40 vendors from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. will exhibit items for sale that include everything from arts and crafts, clothing and jewelry to imported furniture.

On Sunday, the Palmsbury Bake-Off entries will be judged. The recipe with the most “original flair” using citrus will win the title. Categories for baked goodies include cakes, cookies, pies, sweet breads and jams and jellies. The main stage will include activities and acoustical performances for Sunday visitors as well.

Flanagan's Beer Run & Dunedin Duathlon

The duathlon race will begin at 520 Douglas Avenue with parking adjacent at the (Dunedin) Florida Auto Exchange Stadium on Douglas Avenue.

All participants will walk downtown to the 11 am celebration at Flanagans Irish Pub where you'll receive your free beer and reward for racing! Top Finishers awards will be presented to the top 50 males and top 50 females in the 5K open run which begins at 10 am. Names will be posted at the Flanagans post race party, however, the names will not be called out loud due to the CRAZINESS OF THIS AMAZING PARTY IN THE STREETS!

The first wave of duathletes will take off at 8 am (waves 1 and 2 were combined to make up this wave) Wave two of duathletes will begin at 9 am. Anyone registered for the duathlon can participate for free in the final 5K open at 10 where the post race party begins at 11 am in the downtown streets of Dunedin at Flanagans.

Each registrant receives the Flanagans St. Patricks Day Duathlon/5K race shirt.

There is a BIG FIGHT 3/2 UFC on FX2

This weekend, the UFC will return to Australia, where the organization will introduce its flyweight division in the form of a four-man tournament for the 125-pound title.

In the tournament's semifinals, former bantamweight title contenders Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson will make their respective flyweight debuts against Yasuhiro Urushitani and Ian McCall.

Japanese Shooto champion Urushitani and Tachi Palace Fights champion McCall vacated their titles for a chance to compete inside the UFC's Octagon for the first time in their careers.

Meanwhile, the main event will feature welterweights Thiago Alves and Martin Kampmann, who will each be looking for a second straight win in their chase for a shot at the 170-pound title.

To promote the upcoming event, which will be held at the Allphones Arena in Sydney, Australia, the UFC will hold a prefight press conference on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.

The family oriented event will include food, fun and parades featuring pets and children.

Attendees will enjoy grilled food, live entertainment for all ages, arts and crafts vendors, a patriotic children's parade to include a full color guard and fire trucks, and a pet parade for pet owners to show off their favorite furry, feathered, or other non-human friends.

There will be plenty of activities to keep kids busy and entertained, including a bounce house, crafts and face painting. Children are encouraged to dress up a bicycle or wagon, as well as themselves and join the expanded half mile long patriotic parade.

Grown ups will find plenty to do as well. There will be a street party complete with beer truck.

The event, which celebrates the wonderful weather and IRB community, also supports Calvary Episcopal Church's Community Food Pantry and the Indian Rocks Volunteer Fireman's Association. Funds will be raised through a silent auction, bake sale and raffles.

Insider tips: Fans of the RenFest show up in costume to get in on the fun, and children dress like princesses and fairies. Whatever your outfit, make sure it includes comfortable shoes that you don't mind getting dirty. This is a field, not a paved mall.

There's standard fair food, but get into the spirit and gnaw on a giant smoked turkey leg or try a Scotch egg (that's a hard-boiled egg encased in sausage and deep fried) and wash it down with a pint of grog as you take in a medieval comedy show or knights jousting on horseback.

Don't forget your sense of humor as the Washing Well Wenches on stage may have a saucy comment or two for you.

One of the highlights of the fair is the daily jousting match, usually held multiple times throughout the day, in which opposing sides of the field are allied with different jousting opponents. Each side cheers as their knight in full armor attempts to knock the other from his horse.

Every February during the Florida State Fair, Cracker Country opens its gates to the Fair's guests! Take a stroll back in time and relax as you experience the sights, sounds, and smells of Florida's history. Explore the museum grounds and interact with costumed interpreters to take part in the customs of the past! Take home a newspaper printed on an antique printing press right before your eyes, and try a taste of real sugar cane before watching its juice being boiled into syrup! Visit the post office and have a letter mailed with a special Cracker Country cancellation! Visit crafters and trade demonstrators throughout the museum grounds, see how tools were used in the early 1900s, and discover the art of spinning, woodcarving, blacksmithing, and making cow whips in the time of Florida's pioneers! End the afternoon with a bag of fresh kettle corn, smoky beef jerky, and a refreshing cup of lemonade as you enjoy traditional country music under a canopy of oak trees. Make sure to stop by the Cracker Country General Store to take home an old-fashioned souvenir!

Elio Camacho will return to the Beach Art Center in February of 2012 for a still life workshop. Mixing color with brush strokes, compositional studies, lighting and the discipline of changing light conditions will be explored. Thousands line the downtown waterfront to watch the spectacle as fully-rigged pirate ship Jose Gasparilla sails into the south end of Hillsborough Bay with hundreds of pirates aboard, cannons booming and a massive flotilla of pleasure boats accompanying it. The ship docks at the Tampa Convention Center around 1 p.m., where the mayor will surrender the key to the city into the hands of the captain of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla.

After their invasion aboard the Jose Gasparilla, hundreds of pirates get down to the serious business of the day: Tossing thousands of beads to hundreds of thousands who line the streets along Tampa's waterfront. This parade brings more than 140 units, including 90 floats, marching bands and 50 pirate krewes. It begins at Bay to Bay Boulevard and follows Bayshore Boulevard to Brorein Street, turns east on Brorein, then north on Ashley Drive and ends at Cass Street.

Following the parade, the pirate fest continues with a variety of live entertainment on stages throughout downtown Tampa. The newly redesigned and expanded Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, located on the east side of the Hillsborough River across from the University of Tampa between Madison and Polk, will host the main Gasparilla entertainment stage.

A Latin-themed entertainment stage is located downtown before the parade in MacDill Park, on the west side of Ashley Drive along the river between Whiting and Jackson Streets.

Tips for navigating the day

PARKING
Private lots throughout downtown Tampa will be open during Gasparilla, with varying rates. The public parking garages at the Tampa Convention Center, under the Crosstown between Florida Avenue and Morgan Street, under the Crosstown east of Morgan Street, on Channelside Drive between Florida Avenue and Morgan Street, Fort Brooke and Whiting Street all charge $10. But the best option, on our experience is to park far away and hop on board the TECO Line Streetcar ($5 for an unlimited pass) in Ybor City and ride it into downtown Tampa. Park your car at the Centro Ybor Parking Garage or the Palm Avenue Garage. It's $1 for the first three hours; up to $10 depending on how long it's there. RESTROOMS
There are portable toilets along the parade route, near reserved parade seating and at the downtown street festival, but plan ahead because lines typically will be long. Publix, 243 Bayshore Blvd., offers its restrooms to the public. Hyde Park Village has public restrooms on the west side of Snow Avenue, as does Kate Jackson Park at Rome and Snow avenues. Facilities at restaurants and bars near the festivities are for paying customers only. Depending on the lines elsewhere, you might find it's worth the cost of a cover charge.

DRINKS
Do not walk around with your red cup of beer. Police in recent years have gotten much tougher and issue hundreds of open container citations on Gasparilla day. Look for signs about the permitted areas, but the basic rule is if you are at the parade route, you can have an open container. If you are in the neighborhoods, you cannot.

MONEY
Bring cash because many of the ATMs set up along the parade route charge steep fees, and most vendors only take cash.

BEADS
Despite its rowdy reputation, "flashing" for beads is frowned upon. There are kids here, people. But here's a tip we learned from recent years: The crowds on the last segment of the parade downtown are often half the size of those on Bayshore Boulevard, so it ups your chances of catching more beads.

DESIGNATED DRIVER
Have one for your car or your boat because police are all over, on land and sea, looking for impaired drivers.

PROHIBITED
No large coolers or kegs. Open containers are allowed in designated areas only. Absolutely no glass bottles. You can have soft-sided coolers or lunch bags for children or medical needs.

REMEMBER WHERE YOU PARKED
Text yourself where you left your car. Police complain that they are hounded for directions by lost revelers.

RESERVE A SEAT
If you don't want to worry about finding a place to see the parade, you can reserve a bleacher seat or get a hospitality ticket. They range in price from $29.91 to $92.52 at gasparillatreasures.com.

The Clearwater area was originally inhabited by the Tocobagan Indians. Colonists began to settle in the area in the 1830s. Dr. Odet Philippe, a French Count and once a French surgeon in Napoleon's navy, was one of the first European's to settle here. His plantation was built on the area that is now known as Philippe Park.

Fort Harrison was built in 1841 to support soldiers during the Seminole war. Shortly after the end of the war, the government encouraged occupation of the region through homesteading. Clear Water Harbor, as it was known during this time, was an agricultural and fishing community. The next decades saw slow growth.

In 1891, Clearwater was incorporated as a town. Soon it became known as a tourist and resort area in the late 1800s, particularly after Henry B. Plant built the first passenger railroad line into the town in 1888 and the Belleview Biltmore resort in 1897.

Clearwater was reincorporated as a city in 1915. Clearwater Island, now Clearwater Beach, was only accessible by boat. A wooden bridge was built in 1916 that connected Clearwater to its barrier island.

Development continued and tourism increased, and today we have a community of over 100,000 people.
